Alcenia’s Desserts and Preserves
This is soul food, this is good food. To me I often associate soul food with comfort food. While it may be difficult to describe, you know it if you have ever had it. I will not try to describe soul food and comfort food directly but in discussing Alcenia’s you should get a general understanding. Let me say that if you have never had soul food, if should be on your version of the “bucket list.”
Alcenia’s Desserts and Preserves is a smallish bistro style restaurant located at 317 North Main Street in Memphis. Click HERE for a map. Alcenia’s is a brightly colored restaurant with original artwork on the walls and a true Memphis original in Alcenia herself. If you have never visited Memphis, you may not know about Alcenia’s. This is THE place for Chicken and Waffles and yes, you eat them together! If that is not your thing, Alcenia’s also has fried catfish, meatloaf, and fried pork chops. And if you like vegetables, these will soothe your longing for green beans made just like mom used to; and cabbage made like you wish mom had made it! Of course there is the requisite sweeter than sweet iced tea and hot water cornbread. Do you see what I mean by soul food? Comfort food? If you need another example, there are the desserts; its in the name after all! Egg custard pie, buttermilk pie, bread pudding…can you really pick just one? This is the south, this is good food. And just when you think you are finished, there are the preserves and apple butter to take home to remind you to come back.
