The Pink Palace Museum

The Pink Palace Museum is one of the largest museums in the Southeast. It was opened as a museum in March of 1930. Though it was originally intended to be the personal residence of Clarence Saunders, the founder of the Piggly Wiggly chain of grocery stores, Saunders lost his fortune and the home was donated as a museum to the city of Memphis.

pic-museum.jpgThe museum contains a complete history of the region. The fossilized remains of early dinosaurs that are housed in the museum tell the prehistory of the region while the dioramas and artifacts from ancient Native American tribes tell about the life of early man in the region. There is an impressive collection of art and artifacts from the early Spanish explorers through the Civil War directly into modern times. One of the most impressive exhibits is the walk through replica of the first self serve grocery in America, Piggly Wiggly!

From the pink Georgia marble that helped to give the museum its identity to the newer museum expansions, the Pink Palace is truly a Tennessee landmark. If you are in Memphis, this museum can help you recapture that feeling of excitement and awe that was commonplace during childhood.
