The Orpheum Theater
The Orpheum Theater is the premier theater house in Memphis, Tennessee. Known as “The South’s Finest Theater” it was built on the corner of Main Street and Beale Street in 1890. The original theater, named the Grand Opera House, was a magnificent host for many early vaudeville entertainers. In 1923 the Grand Opera House was destroyed by fire. When it was rebuilt in 1928 it became known as the Orpheum. The new theater was twice as large as its predecessor and was lavishly decorated with gilded moldings and crystal chandeliers. Another addition was the Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ. With the death of vaudeville, the Orpheum’s popularity faltered until it was purchased in 1977 by the Memphis Development Foundation. The new owners were able to attract Broadway shows to this beautiful theater and on Christmas 1982, the theater underwent a two year, $5 million renovation. The Orpherum was reborn and since its restoration has been a venue of choice for many of Broadway’s greatest shows. This year the Orpheum celebrates its 80th anniversary. If you ever have the opportunity to take in a show at the Orpheum, do it. You will be glad you did.
